Four of us, six days a week, in a building that has held a market since 1805.
Cortile means "courtyard" in Italian. The covered, paved heart of an old Italian building, where a family takes its coffee. We borrowed the word because it described what we wanted to build inside Pontypridd Indoor Market: a small, paved place to sit, surrounded by the building, with a cup pulled by someone you can see by name.
The market is the heritage anchor. A market has stood on the site since 1805. The current Mannerist-style stone hall was completed in 1885 by William Seaton of Pontypridd at a cost of 1,600 pounds. In 1890 it grew with the Arcade hall and the Town Hall auditorium above. Largest indoor market in Wales. Grade II listed. We opened in Central Hall in April 2017.
Our proudest moment was becoming the Gaggia UK Specialist for Wales. The Cortile family, Your Pontypridd interview
